YOUR CASH, CARDS AND CYBERSPACE: Tips for Shopping Online Safely

It can take years to get to your savings goal but just a few seconds of cyber-crime to ruin it. Here’s your reminder that across the world, October is observed as cybersecurity awareness month. Cybersecurity is simply the measures you put in place to protect your internet-connected systems, such as computers, mobile devices and servers, from hackers.

Let’s face it, advancements in technology have made the world more interconnected than ever. Now from your couch in Jamaica you’re able to order that vanity mirror you’ve always wanted from China. But while your online transactions are growing, so too are cyberthreats. That’s what today’s focus is on, shopping safely online, without getting your cash or card swindled.

  • “Security is not a one-time event. It’s an ongoing process.” –  Secure your money by constantly monitoring your financial statements after shopping online. Be sure to keep up with your bank and credit card statements and if you notice anything suspicious or unauthorised, report it immediately to your financial institution.
  • “Your password, your first line of defence.” – Create strong and unique passwords for each of your online accounts. A strong password usually includes a mix of letters, special characters and numbers.
  • “There’s no silver bullet solution with cyber security; a layered defence is the only viable defence.” – So, here’s a layered defence… how about enabling two-factor authentication on your online accounts? This is pretty much an extra layer of security or two different forms of passwords to access your account; it could be a text message with a code or even another authentication app.
  • “Your click, their catch.” – Makes sure that you’re clicking on secure websites. This means that the website’s URL should begin with https://. You can also look for a padlock symbol in the browser’s address bar which indicates that the website hides your data.

Enjoy the convenience of online shopping by embracing safe online shopping habits to protect yourself from financial fraud and cyber threats, while also securing your financial future.
